Admission and Requirements
Admission to the Doctoral Programme is based on the following conditions in compliance with § 60 and § 64 of the University Studies Act (Universitätsgesetz 2002):
- Degree of a relevant Diploma- or Master-Programme
- Completion of a relevant Degree programme issued by an accredited Austrian or foreign post-secondary
education institution
- Degree of a relevant course at a Technical College („Fachhochschule“) according to § 5 Abs. 3 of the Technical
Colleges Act („Fachhochschulgesetz“)
Students applying for a Doctoral Programme are required to submit the following documents:
1) Application for Admission to a Doctoral Programme;
2) Diploma(s) of an Austrian or foreign post-secondary education institution (if applicable Bachelor- and Masterdegree);
3) Transcript of grades (if applicable from Bachelor- and Master programme);
4) Short description of the thesis in English or German language;
5) Proof of direct admission to the respective doctoral programme in the country of origin;
Proof of direct admission is not requested in the following cases:
a. Citizens of EU and EEA countries (independent of the country of issue of the diploma);
b. The centre of the vital interests of the applicant or the person obliged to provide maintenance for the applicant
(i.e. exclusively a parent or spouse) has continuously been in Austria throughout the 5 years directly preceding the application. The centre of vital interests must be proven by submission of a registration certificate. Additionally, an insurance certificate, a work certificate, a wage tax card or similar document must be provided;
c. The applicant or the person obliged to provide maintenance for the applicant enjoy diplomatic immunity in Austria (submission of the „legitimation card“ in original and copy);
d. The applicant is a refugee officially recognised in Austria pursuant to the Geneva Convention;
e. The applicant has applied for asylum in Austria and asylum proceedings are pending. In this case, a valid
„asylum card“ must be submitted in original and copy;
f. The applicant submits a secondary school leaving diploma issued by an Austrian school abroad (e.g. St. Georgs
Kolleg in Istanbul);
g. The applicant is a foreign journalist accredited and having his or her main occupation in Austria. This provision
also includes the spouses and children of foreign journalists (submission of the accreditation document);
h. The applicant has been granted a scholarship for the intended course of studies under provisions of a state treaty or, in the same amount, from those funds of an Austrian territorial authority that must, pursuant to the
financial provisions of the relevant territorial authority, expressly be used for scholarships;
6) Acceptance of supervision by a professor of the Vienna University of Technology (the Studies and Examination
Department has not the possibility to arrange a supervision). A list of the Institutes and the associated staff can be

7) Curriculum Vitae;
8) Research Proposal is necessary for admission to a Doctoral Programme in Architecture, otherwise it is
recommended;
